The Feed And Posts
Writing a post, who can see it, tagging another operator, reactions and comments, and what to do about a post that should not be there.
The Feed
The feed is the running conversation on QSL Shack. It is the first screen you see when you sign in, and it holds posts from the operators you are connected to along with public posts from the wider site.
A club's own feed is separate. Posts written there stay in that club and never appear here; Groups And Clubs covers them.
A post can carry text, one picture, or a link to a video, and any of those on its own is enough.
How To Write A Post
- Open the feed.
- Write in the box at the top. It is headed with your callsign, and it takes up to 5,000 characters.
- Add a picture with Photo, or a video link with Video. A video is a YouTube or Vimeo address rather than a file you upload.
- Add a feeling if you want one. The picker has a search box, so type what you are after rather than scrolling.
- Choose who sees it. Public is anybody, signed in or not. Connections are the operators in your Network.
- Press Post.
A post needs at least one of text, a picture or a video. Pressing Post with all three empty says so rather than posting nothing.
Pictures must be JPG, PNG or GIF and under 10 MB.
Posting in a club's feed works the same way, except there is no audience to choose: the post goes to that club's approved members only.
If you belong to a club with a feed, posting on the main feed is followed by Also share this post with your clubs? Tick the clubs and press Share, or press No thanks. Each club gets its own copy, with its own comments.
How To Comment And React
Press the reaction control under a post to react to it, and press the same one again to take your reaction back. Choosing a different one changes your mind rather than adding a second.
Comments go in the box under the post, up to 1,000 characters, and a reply goes under the comment it answers.
Deleting a comment takes its replies with it. You may delete your own comment. Nobody else may, including the operator whose post it sits on, with two exceptions: an administrator can remove any comment on the site, and in a club's feed the club's owner and Managers can remove any comment or reply.
How To Tag Another Operator
Tagging an operator in a post or a comment turns what you typed into a link to his profile and tells him he was tagged.
- Type the at sign, then his screen name, with nothing between them.
- Carry on writing. The tag ends where the name ends.
Write it as @screenname or @callsign. There is no space after the at sign and there are no brackets around the name.
A callsign works in place of a screen name, and so does a screen name an operator used before he changed it. Both reach the same operator.
What you typed is what stays on the page. The link points at wherever that operator lives now, so an old post keeps reading the way it was written and still goes to the right profile.
Capitals do not matter. A name in a tag runs from two to twenty characters and may hold letters, digits, an underscore and a hyphen.
Ten tags are honored in a post or a comment. The same operator tagged twice counts once. An eleventh operator is left as plain text and is not told.
A tag that matches no operator stays plain text rather than becoming a link that goes nowhere.
In a club's feed, tags reach that club's members only. A member of the club is told as usual. Anybody else is not told, and the tag does not let them see the post.
How To Delete Your Own Post
- Open the post, from the feed or from your profile.
- Use the post's own menu and choose to delete it.
A deleted post takes its picture, its comments and its reactions with it, and it cannot be brought back.
In a club's feed, the club's owner and Managers can also delete any member's post.
How To Report A Post
- Open the post's menu and choose to report it.
- Pick the reason that fits.
- Add anything the reason does not cover, up to 1,000 characters.
- Submit it.
Every administrator is notified straight away. You cannot report your own post, and you cannot report the same post twice.
Who Can See What
A public post is public. It is visible to anybody who reaches it, including a visitor who is not signed in.
A connections post is for your accepted connections. Nobody else reaches it, and it does not appear in a stranger's feed.
Tagging somebody lets them in. An operator you tag in a post can open that post even when they are not one of your connections, and so can anybody who has commented on it or been tagged in a comment. That is deliberate: a conversation you were invited into is a conversation you can read.
A club post is for that club. Only the club's approved members can open it. Being tagged in it or commenting on it does not let anybody else in.
What To Watch For
Choose the audience before you press Post. Public is what the box starts on.
A video is a link rather than a file. Paste the address of the video, and QSL Shack draws the player.
Tagging an operator notifies them. Use it to bring somebody into a conversation, not for decoration.
